Seeking to love our neighbor following the example of Jesus.
Bethlehem’s Outreach Ministries are the outward-looking part of Bethlehem, seeking to love our neighbor following the example of Jesus - who calls us in the parable of the Good Samaritan to “go and do likewise” by serving “as you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to me.” Outreach is involved in local, national, and international social action and missions support. Outreach is organized into three areas: Global Mission, Local Mission, and Advocacy. Globally we support ELCA missionaries (and host visits), the Navajo Lutheran Mission, and support ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Response. We interact with two “sister” churches in Hungary and Indonesia and our partner synod in Madagascar. Locally we support social ministries such as Self Help Inc., the Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and Taos food banks, the Santa Fe homeless shelter, UNM campus ministry, Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, and regional ELCA mission churches. We also reach out into nearby communities at Thanksgiving and Christmas with personalized food boxes. In the Advocacy arena we are a covenant church of Bread for the World, we support Lutheran Advocacy Ministry – New Mexico. Outreach designates four special offerings during the year – at Easter, Reformation, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We also invite outside preachers, especially timed around Reformation. We seek to embody the hymn “You Will Know They are Christians by Their Love.”
